THE SEVEN TRILOGY - Get To Know My Character (What's Their Name Tag)!

"Skylar is a monster. At least, that's what he believes..." Read to learn more about my current work-in-progress and the character who may or may not be the villain of his own story...

I was recently tagged for the "What's Their Name Tag" by the amazing Miley Simmonds! I try not to do many blog tags, but this one looked really fun, and I thought it would be a cool way to give everyone an inside peek into my current writing project. Be sure to check out her blog, and thank you for the tag, Miley!

For this tag, I'll be using Skylar. He's one of the main characters in my time-travel trilogy, The Seven.

the rules:

1. Don't take other people's words or ideas

2. Make sure the story is kid-friendly

3. Don't be mean or bully others with your post

4. Fill out the questions as the characters were at the beginning of the book

5. You can tag up to seven bloggers

6. Make sure to email faithandwriting@gmail.com when you complete the tag

7. Link back to the blogger who created the tag (Miley Simmonds)

the questions:

1. What's their name?

Skylar S.461. His name means "protector" which is just perfect for who he is as a character. In the society he lives in, people are given code numbers instead of last names. I won't go into all that now, but his code name has quite a bit of meaning as well!

2. What's their role? (Sidekick, Main Character, Villain, etc)

Skylar is one of the three main characters in The Seven but also becomes one of the main antagonists. So I guess you could say he's kind of an anti-hero. I won't say anymore because of spoilers, however. *wink wink*

3. Do they love anyone?

He did. He blames himself for her death, which is a large part of his internal conflict.

4. Do they have any relatives?

Hehe, this is not for you to know yet... 😉

5. Inspiration for the character?

Oh man, so much has gone into this character. I originally had him cast in a different novel project, but it eventually became clear that he was meant for The Seven. Developing Skylar has been quite the journey, I must say. Below are the mood board and playlist I've created for him, both of which have really helped solidify him in my mind and bring him to life on the page.

6. Backstory?

Unfortunately, if I were to say this, it would spoil the entire series.😅 A major theme of the trilogy has to do with the power of memory, overcoming fear, and reconciling the past. Since the world is built around time travel, the characters' backstories are like a tangle of string that's slowly unraveled throughout the story.

7. Dream? Fears?

Ah, yes, this is my favorite question. *rubs hands together*

In short, Skylar wants to be worthy of love and appreciation, and his pursuit of this leads him to a heavy criminal lifestyle. He's desperate to prove himself and is terrified of letting others down. He believes he's a monster because of his past, and he fears the day when someone else will discover his darkest secret. So he lies. About everything.

8. Friends?

Skylar has many friends and inside connections with both the Scepter and traitors to the Scepter. While I won't mention them all, his closest comrade is a young computer hacker named Xacri. The two of them couldn't be more different, and I have such a blast writing their banter.

9. What is the story's name?

The Seven is (what I'm planning to be) a three-book series. One Forgotten is the first, followed by Void Tomorrow, and Space Between! 😊

10. Blurb of the story?

It's a little rough since I'm still developing it as I work on the trilogy, but here's the original concept...

"And now that I have the option of finally forgetting... do I want to?"

Belonging to a group of outcasts known by society as Discrimes, Lyra has spent her entire life hiding behind walls. All she wants is a life without the shackles of fear that hold her hostage, but being a target of the Ruling Scepter, freedom is as distant as the star she watches every night from her window. Born with a disease that no doctors have been able to diagnose — let alone cure — Lyra must give up her dream of freedom and continue to hide, or be killed by the Scepter.

Skylar is a monster. At least, that’s what he believes. After trying to save his only friends from a Timeportal, but triggering a fatal explosion instead, he is tormented by guilt and memories he wishes he could forget. Desperate to escape his past and prove himself as the hero he’s always wanted to be, Skylar rebels against the Ruling Scepter to help a group of outcasts. But his plan quickly backfires, and Skylar is forced to come face to face with the darkness of his past… and the girl he thought he murdered.

Sold into the Scepter’s military as a young girl, Faye knows that the only way to survive is to hide her true identity at all costs. Abused since childhood, she trusts no one, relying on her own instincts to ensure her survival. Leveling up in rank seems to be the only way out of her life of violence and corruption, and she’s determined to do so. But after colliding with two of the Scepter’s most wanted criminals — Skylar S.461 and Lyra S.222 — Faye, as well as the others, are forced to realize that there may be more to their stories than they realize and that the pasts they’re running from may be the only ticket to the freedom they desperately want.

11. What are their habits?

Motorcycles. He loves his motorcycle, and honestly, anything that gives him a surge of adrenaline or distracts him from his guilt. He's also become sort of a "Robin Hood", stealing from the Scepter's ration supply in order to benefit starving civilians and feel like he's worthy of acceptance. He's also constantly fixing his hair, being the perfectionist that he is... XD

12. Random fact about them?

He's been obsessed with superheroes since he was a little boy and collects Marvel comic books (which are basically antiques with how far into the future this story takes place).

13. Personality?

Skylar is friendly, generous, self-sacrificing, fast-paced, perfectionistic, impulsive, daring, kindhearted, reckless, and people-pleasing. He's motivated by a strong desire to be seen as a hero by coming to the rescue of others. Failure is detrimental to him, and he suffers a great deal of guilt over the mistakes he's made. For those of you who are familiar with the Enneagram, Skylar is a type two with a three wing.

14. Hobbies?

Again, motorcycles. Car chases seem to be a favorite pastime of his, as well as speaking sarcasm (in which he's quite fluent). 😂

15. Inspiration for the story?

I believe much of this story was given to me by the Holy Spirit, but it's also largely inspired by J.R.R Tolkien's works (specifically, The Lord of the Rings and The Fall of Númenor), The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Invictus by Ryan Graudin. Below I've included the official playlist and aesthetic board. 😊

Ooo, very intriguing, Ava! I like dystopian stories (though I haven't read a ton...mostly in the MG genre lol.) Anyway, I think they're interesting because they show what life could be like, and raise questions like 'what would people do in this situation', or 'how would they fix it', things like that.

Girl, I LOVE SKYLAR. And I'm begging you, Ava, pleaaaaaase give him a happy ending!!!! (I'm assuming he does get one, but still XD) I know he kinda becomes the antagonist, but...augh, my heart COULD NOT SURVIVE if he had a hopeless ending. I feel like I know him so well and just ahhhhh!!!! *sobs* His playlist is wonderfully long and just amazing, and I love the Pinterest moodboards!!! (Those quotes hit hard.) In fact, I love The Seven Trilogy and I haven't even read it. *sobs some more* You are creating a masterpiece, girl. I can't wait to read it someday.

*stops rambling and clears throat*

Aww, Saraina!! Your comments always make me so happy! I'm so glad you love him! 🥰 Ahh, I don't quite have his ending planned out yet... honestly, my heart couldn't survive a tragic ending for him either, but it will probably be bittersweet. I'm hoping to do a redemption arc, but we'll see... 😄 Aww, I'm so glad!! Thank you so much!!!❤️
